Because the disease begins in the soil, it is often difficult to detect whether a tree is infected until the disease is well advanced. Once a tree is infected, the pathogen is likely to have spread through moisture in the soil, to infect nearby kauri trees. Once infected, nearly all affected kauri will die.

Research undertaken at the University of Auckland has demonstrated that there is the potential for plant health to improve and slow the spread of the pathogen when being treated by phosphite.
